  Lower Case Definition
Lower case became irresistible to manuscript writers because it was faster to write, it was easier to read and it conserved space on the costly parchment (which was made from animal skins and used instead of paper).
In modern English, upper case is used for (1) the first letter of each sentence, (2) the first letter of each proper noun (i.e., the name of a person, place, organization, etc.), (3) all letters in initials and (4) all letters in acronyms.
Usually the two cases were placed one above the other on a rack on the typesetter's desk, with the case containing the capital letters (i.e., the upper case) positioned above that containing the small letters (i.e., the lower case).

Letter case - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In orthography and typography, letter case (or just case) is the distinction between majuscule (capital or upper-case) and minuscule (lower-case) letters.
Historically the two cases were placed one above the other on a rack on the typesetter's desk and, by convention, the case containing the capitals would be above the box with the small letters, hence upper and lower case.
The Oxford Universal Dictionary on Historical Principles (reprinted 1952) indicates that this usage of "case" (as the box or frame used by a compositor in the printing trade) was first used in 1588.

The purpose of the Upper Case is to hold the majiscule characters, ie capitals, and the small capitals, accented letters, and some punctuation and signs.
It is called an Upper case in U.K., Haut de casse in France, Bovenkast in Holland, Caps case or News Caps case in U.S., Caxa (cassa) Alta in Spain.
Whilst separate Upper and Lower cases were essential for bookwork, the smaller founts in use for jobbing work were easier to hold in Job or Double cases, which appeared in the nineteenth century, and essentially comprised a (small) complete lower case, with half an upper case in the third bay.

Halfbakery: Upper and lower case numbers
Being upper case or lower case would have no affect on the numeric value.
If we introduced upper and lower case digits then a row of 1s would have narrower interstitial spacing than a row of 4s, so they would occupy different lengths on a line.
Given that monospaced fonts with upper- and lower-case letters exist, I don't think it would be too difficult to keep cased numbers monospaced.

 [No title]
There is a persistent misunderstanding within the ranks of the "tax honesty" community involving the rendering of names in all upper case letters.
The "income" tax scheme does not rest on the presumption that Americans are corporations, of course-- if it did, anyone hauled into a courtroom to defend themselves against allegations of failure-to-pay or failure-to-file would simply furnish the court with an affidavit challenging the obviously ridiculous presumption, and walk away with an easy victory.
Nor is there any deep and nefarious meaning to the use of upper case letters on bureaucratic forms-- a practice embraced by most American pharmacies just as much as by federal agencies.

Performance Tip: Upper Case vs Lower Case
So if a character is uppercase (not in the range of the lower case character codes) then all that happens is a simple numerical compersion, and then move on to the next character.
If the character is lower case then we still do the numerical compersion, and also perform an addition (which includes two reads, and a mathematical operation), and write a value to memory.
Another thing to note is that case conversions in UTF-8 have the ability to change the stored byte size of the converted string, sometimes resulting in buffer reallocation.

Capital letters or majuscules (in the Roman alphabet: A, B, C,...) are one type of case in a writing system.
