  Upstairs, Downstairs
Upstairs, Downstairs was one of the first series of its type to be produced on videotape rather than film (though certain scenes, mainly exteriors and location shots, were shot on film).
Upstairs, Downstairs was first shown on British television in 1971 and continued through four series of 13 episodes each (two Edwardian series, a later pre-war series, and a World War I series) and a fifth series of 16 episodes (post-war) making a total of 68 episodes produced and broadcast.
Upstairs, Downstairs was the inspiration for the short-lived CBS television series Beacon Hill that concerned a well-to-do Boston family and their domestic staff during the 1920s (broadcast fall, 1975).

Just so you’re clear about who’s on first, this week the review is of the downstairs part of UpStairs on the Square, which is in the space that used to be the upstairs part of Grendel’s Den, which is still downstairs from UpStairs on the Square.
The menu and chef are different in the upstairs and the downstairs parts of UpStairs on the Square, which is still a full flight of stairs up from the sidewalk of Harvard Square.
But this is the downstairs part, which perhaps should be called DownStairs at UpStairs on the Square, since it is in what used to be Grendel’s attic, but now UpStairs on the Square’s bar and informal dining room are there, with the fancy dining room upstairs.

It is a widely held belief that Upstairs Downstairs was television at its finest, and the most popular tv drama in the world.
This leaves the upstairs structure of the house unsettled, and the series is dark and sombre, as James' doomed marriage and Richard's bereavement make the house seem a far cry from the high society gatherings and royal dinners of the early seasons.
The final scene, as Rose is left alone in the house with the ghosts of the past echoing around her, is both a fine depictuion of the sentimentality of leaving a lifestyle behind and a cunning wallow in nostalgia.

Upstairs, Downstairs drew the audience in from the first episode to the last and made stars of Pauline Collins and many others.
Much of the show's tension came from the clash of the cultures of the two "families": the upper-class blood relatives upstairs and the working-class de facto family of servants downstairs.
She kept James in check (but would probably have been happier as Richard's wife; James was such a baby - not a man at all), stood up to Hudson on occasion, and did the servants' bidding with the patriarchy of the household when the situation called for it.

And both thermostats are located downstairs - around the corner from each other on the other side of the house from the staircase that connects the floors.
My thought is that it will get hot as hell upstairs when the downstairs unit is set to a low temperature because the unit keeps blowing air upstairs without ever significantly raising the temperature downstairs - so the thermostat will never reach its set point.
And then the upstairs unit is only used during the summer drawing the cool air from the downstairs.

 Upstairs Downstairs: Analysis
The incidences of those that "never hear" impact-borne sounds upstairs are greatly contrasting to the incidences of those who "always hear" noises downstairs.
Of the responses it is also evident that although the percentages of respondents that hear airborne sound is generally higher, the transmission of airborne sounds for those living downstairs is comparable to those living upstairs.
It is also interesting to observe that the shape of the trendline for impact sound heard upstairs is the same as the two trendlines for airborne sound.

Upstairs, Downstairs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Upstairs, Downstairs was a 1970s British television series set in a grand Edwardian town house in London and depicting the events of the early twentieth century as they affected the servants ("downstairs") and masters ("upstairs").
Upstairs, Downstairs attempted to portray life in a high-status house set against the events of early 20th century.
The BBC series The Duchess of Duke Street is widely seen as the BBC's answer to Upstairs, Downstairs, not least because some of the same producers and writers worked on it, and it also has a theme tune by Faris.

The first half (before the advert break) is held in the morning-room with the 'upstairs' cast, all of whom are clearly embarrassed by this experience.
The show moves downstairs to the servants' hall for the longer second half, and the remaining stars of the show get much the same treatment.
One nice idea is that each member of the public who rings in can donate to either notionally support "upstairs" or "downstairs" and this leads to some light-hearted rivalry between the cast members ("upstairs" ends up narrowly winning).
