"What --?" Selene blinked, as the chamber warped and transformed around her for a moment, before morphing into a deep jungle setting, the vegetation obscuring visibility past a few dozen feet, and none of the Upstarts being anywhere to be seen.
Selene smirked, and with her lightning reactions, she was thru his defensive stance far before he could ever react.
Selene had one leg crossed over the other as she watched the intruders to her quarters with calm amusement, as if considering how to play with them.

then PV Comics is lining up to be the Image Comics -- the upstarts coming in, with more of a rockstar feel than the Manley or Crosby approaches.
Many of the print comics from ucomics have better cast pages and strip summaries than most of the online subscription comics.
Nothing at all compared to comic books, but significant compared to, say, My Comics Page, which offers close to 140 strips for twelve bucks a year.

Comic Book Resources Forums - Which Incarnation of the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club was a Threat?
I remember an X-book (What if type) in which Wolverine fought Shinobi Shaw and Betsy Braddock (Black Queen)....
That era ended when the Upstarts came in and destroyed them.
It's definitely the original for me. With Sebastian Shaw (Black King) and Emma Frost (White Queen) as ringleaders, they had nothing less thatn world domination as their goal, and the X-Men were in their way.

 Comic-Con ::
Comics have always been an arriviste art form, and all upstarts are to some degree ashamed of their beginnings.
Not only are comics appealing to a wider and older audience than ever before, but the idea of comics as a valid art form on a par at least with, say, film or rock and roll music, is widely if not quite universally accepted.
In the early days of comics, in fact, unlike now, there was all kinds of stuff to do that was not only fun and exempt from adult supervision but absolutely free.

Rob's initial investor pulled out not long after the initial launch of Awesome (and the subsequent lawsuit from Marvel over Fighting American may not have helped).

Now, Gladstone wasn't getting rich, but they were successful, a true labor of love with the best Disney comics ever published, a mix of reprints by masters like Carl Barks, Paul Murry, and Floyd Gottfredson, and new material by upstarts William Van Horn and Don Rosa.
Gladstone's Bruce Hamilton regained the license to do Disney books, but had lost much of its momentum, and publication of Gladstone Comics ceased in 1999 (Steve Geppi's Gemstone Publishing now holds the rights to those classic Disney characters).
Publishing will be secondary, if not tertiary (what comes lower than that -- I'm all out of Latin here) in their plans.

Splendid: Departments: Bookshelf: The Comics Journal Special Edition, Vol. I
Championing these upstarts for the past quarter century has been the Comics Journal and its outspoken editor, Gary Groth.
Plenty, fortunately, from Don Phelps' lavishly illustrated overview of the career of '30s comic strip artist Bill Holman (Smokey Stover) to Gary Groth's in-depth interview with "comic journalist" Joe Sacco, whose Palestine (1993) has joined Maus as an important work of emotional and historical reporting.
Since the '60s, however, a sustained assault has been waged on the mainstream of superhero and "funny animal" comics.
