Upstate New York is the region of New York State outside of the core of the New York metropolitan area.
The true upstate area consists of a handful of small and medium-sized cities, squarely in the Rust Belt, which are spread out across the broader region, astride a number of suburban communities, and are all set amid what is a largely rural landscape.
The Southern Tier is a geographical term that refers to the counties of upstate New York State west of the Catskill Mountains along the northern border of Pennsylvania, with the exception of the counties in the far west of the state near the city of Buffalo.

Upstate will always be number one in my book.
Of course I missed all of the beauty of Upstate NY which was not all that apparent growing up in East Utica, but I never considered it an option because I do very well here financially.
