The region is culturally and economically distinct from the New York City area, though the Hudson Valley Dutchess, Putnam, and Orange Counties are increasingly peripheral sections of the New York City metro area.
While New York City remained in the hands of the British during most of the war, the upstate region was firmly in the hands of the Colonial forces.

In July 1673, a Dutch fleet recaptured New York and held it until it was restored to the English by the Treaty of Westminster in February 1674.
Upstate New York (as well as parts of present Ontario, Quebec, Pennsylvania, and Ohio) was occupied by the Five Nations (after 1720 becoming Six Nations, when joined by Tuscarora) of the Iroquois Confederacy for at least a half millennium before the Europeans came.
Upstate New York was also the scene of fighting during the French and Indian War, with British and French forces contesting control of Lake Champlain in association with Native American allies.

The Upstate New York Shaken Baby Syndrome Education Program was featured in the March 2006 edition of The Source, a publication by JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations).
The Upstate New York SBS Education Program is a research study begun in December 1998 with the purpose of educating both parents (mothers and, whenever possible, fathers or father figures) of all infants born in an 8 county region of Western New York, before discharge from the hospital, about the dangers of violent infant shaking.
The new phase in the SBS Education Program is a partnership with the pediatric care providers in these 17 counties.

Paulina Wright Davis (1813-1876) was born in Bloomfield, New York and lived in Niagara Falls, LeRoy, and Utica before moving to Providence, Rhode Island, after her second marriage in 1849.
In 1915, a referendum was held in New York State on the suffrage issue.

Mexican farmworkers and their families are settling in rural upstate New York communities in record numbers, often offsetting recent decades of population loss and making upstate much more diverse.
Seasonal farmworkers in New York used to be primarily African-Americans, but 95 percent of the farmworkers now are Latino, primarily Mexican, and they are increasingly settling down with their families in the farm communities rather than returning to their home countries.
Although the foreign-born population doubled in rural upstate New York between 1990 and 2000, residents of the host communities barely notice the recent settlers, most of whom are undocumented immigrants from Mexico.
