Welcome to Uralla The name Uralla was taken by European settlers from the dialect of the Anaiwan Aboriginals who first occupied the area.
Uralla is said to mean Ceremonial meeting place.
Surrounded in history, Uralla is a wonderful place to visit, the climate is great, the locals are friendly and there is much to see and do around the area.

  Walkabout - Uralla
Uralla calls itself ŒThunderbolt Country¹ and the town's chief claims to fame are the grave of notorious bushranger Thunderbolt (Fred Ward) and Thunderbolt Rock outside the town, a large granite outcrop which has unfortunately been covered by graffiti in recent times.
Uralla's Visitors' Centre is located at the corner of Bridge St (the name of the New England Highway as it passes through town) and Salisbury St. They have pamphlets outlining a self-guided heritage tour and can answer most questions, tel: (02) 6778 4496.
Uralla is closely associated with the bushranger known as Thunderbolt (alias Fred Ward) and at this same corner is a lifesize statue of the outlaw on a horse.

Ned Tricket was killed in an accident in Uralla and was buried in the local cemetary.
Last year, with the consent of the family and with the assistance of the Uralla Shire Council, Ned's magnificent but weathered and vandalised headstone was moved to McCrossin's Mill Museum.
Recently, Ned's decendents, along with representatives of the Uralla Historical Society, attended a special presentation of the silver trophy given to Ned by the city of Ottawa, Canada in recognition of his unique skill and sportsmanship.

Apparently they were from the "other" side of the border, and Mum said we had to be very polite because we were on their turf now- lots were up from Sydney, a couple from a place called Canberra and even one from South Australia.

Last week Uralla Shire Council was advised by the local area commander that one of the town’s four police officers is to be permanently transferred to another town: I do not mean only the person, I mean the position.
Consequently, the Uralla position was shunted to Tamworth, where the officer and the position have been attached to the drug unit that services the region.
