		Urban Hymns, quite simply one of the most ingenious and underrated albums ever produced in the history of music.
		With Ashcroft taking over most of the lyric-writing, and McCabe able to concentrate on his superb guitar playing skills, Urban Hymns became the theme tune of summer 1997, with Bittersweet Symphone being the song which made people stand up and recognise the Verve for wha they are.

		Urban Hymns was a Britpop album released on September 30, 1997 (see 1997 in music) by British rock band The Verve.
		They reunited in 1996 (see 1996 in music) and recorded Urban Hymns, which earned nearly unanimous critical praise upon its release.
		The Verve was known for complex sonic textures, exemplified by songs like "Bittersweet Symphony", which used a sample from an orchestra performing a Rolling Stones sample, reversed it and repeated it to form the musical basis for the song, which was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

		Listening to the Verve's third LP mimics the feeling one gets the day after being bedridden-sick forever and walking out into a 59-degree-cool, fresh, lung-numbing October morning to have a picnic of herbal tea, citruses, and damn good donuts with your lover (who was too afraid of catching your bug for the last week).
		Recommended uses for Urban Hymns-- reading Tolkien, making love, driving at night through Kentucky/Scottish hills, any old time you're tired of the chug and drag of modern rock.

		The album opens with "Bittersweet Symphony," and while the song pretty much thieves the Rolling Stones (to the point where they had to pay virtually all of their royalties of that song to the band), the Verve's version is arguably superior to the Stones.
		Most of the other tracks on Urban Hymns have the same longing, resigned, defeated feel of "Bittersweet Symphony" and their lesser-known hit, "The Drugs Don't Work." The song "The Drugs Don't Work" is said to be either about Ashcroft's own struggles with drug addiction or losing his father.
		But there's no sense in digging for meaning about the song: the lyrics are fairly straightforward and the orchestration is so achingly beautiful that you can't help but feel the line, "like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown" to the marrow.

		Certainly Kula Shaker could put out an album of songs that sound like "The Rolling People" (although the track is quintessential Verve), and the half-dozen or so semi-acoustic tracks don't stand that much apart from the half-dozen or so acoustic tracks on the Charlatans' last album.
		The real gem in Urban Hymns is that it establishes Chris Potter as the producer to watch.
