Commonly associated with, but distinct from, "Popping", which is one element of the Funk Styles that evolvedindependently in California during the late 20th century.
Breakdancing is probably connected to Urban Street Jazz or more likely capoeira,an Afro-Brazilian dance/martial art.
Breakdancing as we know it today developed inNew York City in the late 1970s andearly 1980s, although there is some controversy, and many argue that breakdancing was alsodeveloping in Los Angeles at the same time.However, many believe b-boying is strictly of New York origin.

Due to the younger age demography of the Pasifika population, 67.5% of Pasifika students are enrolled in the primary sector and only 29.3% in the secondary sector.
The focus of the Pasifika Education Plan is to increase Pasifika achievement in all areas of education through increasing participation, improving retention and focussing on effective teaching strategies in early literacy and numeracy.

The first hip hop hit single, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang became a hit in New Zealand when it was released there, in 1980, a year after it was released in the United States.
By the middle of the 1980s, breakdancing and graffiti art were established in urban areas like Wellington and Christchurch.
In the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century, Maori hip hop musicians grew steadily more popular, resulting in a style called Urban Pasifika.

Urban Pasifika is a sub-genre of hip-hop which combines American style hip-hop or RandB rhyming and beats with Pacific Island or Maori instrumentation (such as ukelele samples) and Pacific Island or Maori language singing/rapping.
It originated in Auckland, New Zealand in around 1993 with the release of the album Urban Pasifika - Pioneers of a Pasifikan Frontier on an Auckland based record label started by Phillip Fuemana called Urban Pasifika Records.
Urban Pasifika can also be called Pasifikan Hiphop and has close links with New Zealand hip hop.
