The Urban Transportation Development Corporation was a corporation created in the 1970s by the Government of Ontario, Canada, to develop transit vehicles for the province's public transit authorities; largely this work would be for the province's largest authority, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) for whom the H4/H5 subway cars and ALRV streetcars were manufactured for.
UTDC designed and built the Intermediate Capacity Transit System (ICTS) for the TTC's Scarborough Rapid Transit line and the original Vancouver SkyTrain.
It was later bought by Bombardier Transportation and merged with Hawker Siddeley Canada's Thunder Bay plant (which dated back to Hawker Siddeley's predecessor, Canada Car and Foundry) under the "UTDC" name.

The development of automated urban transportation systems, among which PRT is considered to be the goal, has been a highly interactive process among a wide variety of professionals, politicians, and dedicated citizens.
He gradually developed a total system concept, not only a hardware system but a system integrated into a city, and published his ideas in a book [7] published in 1964, in which all of the essential ideas embodied in PRT are explained.
He too wrestled with the problems of urban transportation with train systems and recognized that the costs were so great that not enough of such systems could be built to make a significant contribution to reducing the needs for automobiles in most cities.
