Hip hop music is an outgrowth of disco and funk music and emerged in the late 1970s as a formidable and innovative force in New York City.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Music | Brits debate over 'urban' music
I don't feel like urban music's just been celebrated by [Joss Stone] winning or her being nominated, or by the Brits acknowledging that there's an urban music scene because it's all a kick in the teeth at the end of the day.
A type of music (especially street music) that originates from a city, and typically reflects or is characteristic of urban life.
Surely the point of having an urban music category is simply to acknowledge artists that are making what is (historically) considered urban music, irrelevent of the colour of their skin, or where they originate from.

Urban music is officially the most popular style in the US - overtaking rock in 2002 and now accounting for 25% of sales.

 The Music of Africa
It is true that the keys to a better understanding of this music were elusive: music and life being intimately connected, it was difficult to separate the various elements.
To make music in Africa, it suffices for someone to begin in order for a second person to come in unexpectedly by tapping on a makeshift instrument, which can be just a bottle.
There are not many forms of urban music born with the development of urban areas.

Traditional Music from the Arabian Gulf [MESA Bulletin, July 1996]
THE MUSIC of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf flourishes predominantly within its own regional boundaries, a function of both the fragmented music distribution channels in the Middle East and the deep imprint that local traditional cultures have left on it.
The distinct sound of Gulf music echoes the internal and external historic influences on the region, interwoven with the highly syncopated rhythms and the stark unaccompanied songs of the Bedouin.
Reflecting the cultural interchange and economic activity of the cities and trading towns, urban music developed into the sawt, a more complex formalized song cycle tradition played by small ensembles consisting of the 'ûd, the mirwâs (a small double-headed drum), and later augmented by the violin in the 20th century.

 Music of North Africa/West Asia
The suite is the form that imposed itself straight-away on the spirit of the music, and it has epitomized the characteristic genius of the art music extending from the Atlantic to the borders of the Himalayas.
The suite is developed in a single musical mode, which gives its name to the suite, but secondary modulations are desired or encouraged and elaborated to an extreme, as in the case of the Ottoman Empire.
Through their intense power of expression, the aesthetics of all these forms of music have in common a concern for suspending time through phenomena of reiterative language and repetition that allow the music to advance while giving the impression of staying in place.

The urban landscape began to shift with the advent of hip-hop; producer and Guy member Teddy Riley crafted a fusion of the two, inserted occasional rap breaks, and dubbed it new jack swing.
Urban and hip-hop continued to cross-pollinate during the early '90s, eventually resulting in a new hybrid tagged "hip-hop soul." Hip-hop soul was rooted in new jack swing, but the beats were funkier, more elastic and unpredictable; while hip-hop soul was still slickly produced, it had a grittier, more soulful feel than new jack.
There was still a side of urban that retained roots in quiet storm and adult contemporary, though, and regardless of which side of the spectrum they fell on, the songs were increasingly becoming showpieces for elaborate vocal technique.
