It's a drizzly midsummer night in Manchester and the lights are reflected in puddles on the recently-laid paving stones.
Manchester City Council have shown great vision and determination in pushing ahead with this remarkable museum, in which I am represented: I contributed to the exhibit City Voices and am one of the people interviewed.
This town hall is the centre of local government for the 450,000 residents of the City of Manchester, around one sixth of the population of the Greater Manchester region.

The centre houses an 1800 space multi-storey car park, shopping malls on two levels, office space in tower, residential flats, and the Arndale Centre Bus Station at Cannon Street, (closed by the IRA bombing of Manchester in 1996, and not yet reopened).
The design for the Centre was made by the architects Hugh Wilson and Lewis Womersley, who had already redeveloped the University Precinct on Oxford Road, as well as a considerable involvement in the redevelopment of housing in the Hulme area.
This is the very last stage in the reconstruction of the city centre since the IRA bombing of 1996 effectively obliterated the heart of Manchester.

I really wanted to enjoy my afternoon at Urbis museum of Urban life - I'd actually visited their toilets before after a particularly bad salad experience and thought the place looked pretty stylish - but Urbis, unfortunately, is all ambition and little substance.
Urbis asks questions of why we are so scared of each other, but offers little historical or political background as to why we might be.
Urbis is free with temporary exhibits ?5/?3.50 and it's next to Victoria Station.
