Ureaplasma urealyticum is a ((microbiology) single-celled or noncellular spherical or spiral or rod-shaped organisms lacking chlorophyll that reproduce by fission; important as pathogens and for biochemical properties; taxonomy is difficult; often considered plants) bacterium belonging to the family (Pleomorphic gram-negative nonmotile microorganism similar to both viruses and bacteria; parasitic in mammals) Mycoplasmataceae.
There are six recognised Ureaplasma species, They have a G+C content of 27 - 30 (The molecular weight of a substance expressed in grams; the basic unit of amount of substance adopted under the Systeme International d'Unites) mol%, and a genome size ranging between 0.76 - 1.17 Gbp, and cholesterol is required for growth.
A defining characteristic of the genera is that they perform (The chief solid component of mammalian urine; synthesized from ammonia and carbon dioxide and used as fertilizer and in animal feed and in plastics) urea hydrolysis.

Therapeutic considerations for Ureaplasma urealyticum infections in neonates.
Treatment of neonates poses special problems because of potential drug toxicity, clinical unfamiliarity with the various conditions that may be due to or associated with ureaplasmal infection, and frequent isolation of the organism from mucosal surfaces in the absence of overt illness.
Case reports have undeniably demonstrated the ability of U. urealyticum to cause neonatal bacteremia, pneumonia, and meningitis, although the frequency with which such clinically significant infections occur among the greater population of colonized neonates is unknown.
