  JGI S. roseus v1.0 Home
Sporobolomyces roseus is a unicellular basidiomycete "red" yeast species, a member of the class Urediniomycetes, that occurs in many different habitats but is frequently associated with plants.
The other Urediniomycete species whose genomes are currently being sequenced are plant pathogens (rusts and smuts) with genome sizes in the range of 25-90 Mbp and highly repetitive DNA content.
Many of the introns in Urediniomycetes may have been recently inserted into their genes, which makes this group of fungi very interesting as a model for studying the evolutionary origins of introns.

A new genus, Classicula, and a new species, Classicula fluitans, are described in the Urediniomycetes for the teleomorph of Naiadella fluitans.
An integrated analysis of morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular data indicates that Classicula fluitans is a member of the Urediniomycetes.
Among the Urediniomycetes, Classicula fluitans shares the formation of simple septal pores associated with microbodies and tremelloid haustorial cells only with the hyphomycet Jaculispora submersa.

JGI - Why Sequence Sporobolomyces roseus?
The other Urediniomycete species whose genomes are currently being sequenced are plant pathogens (rusts and smuts) with genome sizes in the range of 25-90 Mbp and highly repetitive DNA content.
Second, the Urediniomycetes are among the most intron-riddled genomes known.
Many of the introns in Urediniomycetes may have been recently inserted into their genes, which makes this group of fungi very interesting as a model for studying the evolutionary origins of introns.

 DMBclass
The classification of the Urediniomycetes is far from being settled due, among other factors, to the lack of detailed information for many species.
Moreover, the members of the Hymenomycetes have glucose as the major cell wall carbohydrate component and, at variance with the Urediniomycetes and Ustilaginomycetes, xylose is present.

Analyses of sequence data by means of a Bayesian method of phylogenetic inference using a Markov chain Monte Carlo technique reveal the basidiomycetous nature of Tuberculina.
Within the Urediniomycetes, Tuberculina clusters as sister group of Helicobasidium, in close relationship to the rusts (Uredinales).
That indicates actual mycoparasitism of Tuberculina on its close relatives, the rusts.

In ascomycetous yeasts, mitosis in budding cells occur in the parent, while in basidiomycetous yeasts it occurs in the bud, except in Agaricostilbum pulcherrimum.
Technical Abstract: Mitosis in budding cells of ascomycetous yeasts occurs in the parent, while in basidiomyceteous yeasts it occurs in the bud, except in Agaricostilbum pulcherrimum.
Investigation of additional yeasts in the Agaricostilbomycetidae of the Urediniomycetes utilized immunofluorescence localization of freeze-substituted material to visualize mitosis.

The basal divergence in the Basidiomycota is between the Urediniomycetes and the rest of the Basidiomycota (Ustilaginomycetes + Hymenomycetes).
The relationship between the Ustilaginomycetes and Hymenomycetes is suggested by similarities in septal pore and spindle pole body ultrastructure (McLaughlin et al.
This is shown most clearly in cases where the cell wall is ruptured, as in budding of yeast cells (Oberwinkler and Bauer 1989) or branching of hyphae of certain Urediniomycetes (McLaughlin et al.
