  The Michigan Daily Online
Uri Savir, the chief Israeli negotiator in the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks from 1993 to 1996, spoke to a crowd of 800 people - many of whom were University students - last night at Rackham Auditorium.
Ambassador Savir, director general of Israel's Foreign Service, spoke about his participation in the peace agreement at Oslo in 1993, outlining the process and the issues involved in the talks.
Savir argued that as a result of this bilateral cooperation, there will be a Palestinian state by 1999.

'The Process': Giving in for Peace, and Standing Up to Your Own
Savir's book is also the record of a friendship with a man who was first introduced to him in Oslo as "your Enemy No. 1." This enemy-turned-friend is Ahmed Qurei, known as Abu Ala, Savir's Palestinian counterpart (and now speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council).
In Savir's portrait of the talks, he and Abu Ala formed a microcosm of the Palestinian-Israeli relationship, or at least a microcosm of that part of it that was able to overcome decades of murderous hostility and produce extraordinary and unexpected scenes of reconciliation.
Savir, of course, is well aware of the precariousness of the Israeli-Palestinian agreement and the possibility, especially since Rabin's assassination in November 1995, that it might not hold.

Savir accuses the Clinton administration of erring in placing little faith in the Oslo process, because it hoped, in vain as it turned out, for a breakthrough with Syria.
Savir's recounting of the three-plus years of secret negotiations is a revealing and hopeful narrative of a peace process that could have easily derailed--but didn't for at least two reasons.
Uri Savir's personal account of the Oslo process is a fascination human story, as well as a major contribution to history.

The simple reality is that Israel must be constantly prepared to deal with a neighbor that hates Jews so much that they would rather see their children, brothers and sisters blow themselves up rather than have peace.
Uri, Israel must continue to be strong and vigilant, and understanding of the fact that the peace that you speak of is just a fantasy.
