Uriah Heep (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uriah Heep is a British rock band, officially formed in 1969 in England, when record producer Gerry Bron invited keyboardist Ken Hensley (previously a member of The Gods and Toe Fat) to join Spice, a band signed to his own Bronze Records label.
Following the 1976 replacement of vocalist David Byron with John Lawton (formerly of the German band Lucifer's Friend), Uriah Heep turned away from fantasy-oriented lyrics and multi-part compositions back toward a more straightforward hard rock sound typical of the era.
Uriah Heep was one of the first bands to recognize the power of the internet, and maintain a very active web presence, with the band and fans from all over the world actively participating.

Uriah Heep's sound is, basically, a mish-mash of second-hand Deep Purple riffs and keyboard sounds, outtakes from auditions for Jesus Christ Superstar, and Jethro Tull-inspired art-folk-blues.

Heep finally found a stable rhythm section when bassist Gary Thain and drummer Lee Kerslake joined the band, and this proved to be the ultimate Heep line-up.
It was no doubt that Heep now was in the best, most creative and successful part of their career as the classic "Demons and Wizards" was followed up already later the same year by another strong work of fantasy-styled progressive heavy rock.
The 10-minute title-track is Heep from their most progressive and amusing side, and tells the story of a magician's birthday-party that suddenly becomes the scene of a fight between good and evil.

 Uriah Heep
At this point, Uriah Heep were in a transitional state - moving away from the derivative lumpy metal of the previous albums and getting closer and closer to their unabashed dungeons and dragons adventures.
There is NO further proof needed to select Uriah Heep as The Great Cornball Band of the century than this: only Uriah Heep would ever have the guts to call something 'rock'n'roll medley' and have 'Let's Go To The Hop' included in it next to 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Blue Suede Shoes'.
Plus, there's the title track, which is one of those latter-days Heep epics that are somehow palatable; nobody goes overboard, the six-minute running time is more or less justified by the song's complex structure, and the starry-eyed romanticism of the composition isn't at least marred by the usual pocketbook fantasy.

The missing link between Deep Purple and Queen, '70s Britrockers Uriah Heep had it all: epic rock anthems, quasi-operatic vocals, and gothic ax 'n' organ grooves that could send Quasimodo into paroxysms of air guitar.
Heavy with just the right amount of histrionics, our Heep could even swing into ballad mode, albeit with mixed results: "Rain," penned by keyboardist Ken Hensley, is surprisingly gorgeous, whereas an early cover of the Weavers' "Come Away Melinda" is a bit overwrought.
A band whose reach could exceed their grasp, Uriah Heep was the product of a less cynical and calculated time whose innocence and inspirations are well served by this anthology.
