Britannia EBK Biographies: Urien Rheged, King of North Rheged
One of the sons of Cynfarch Oer (the Dismal), Urien appears to have united a Kingdom that was originally either divided between, or shared with his brothers, Llew and Arawn.
Urien's power-base was at Caer-Ligualid (Carlisle), though he also had a palace at Llwyfenydd on the River Lyvennet, and probably at Caer-Brogwm (Brougham) and Pen Rhionydd (possibly near Stranraer) too.
Urien was a great patron of the arts, particularly the works of his personal bard, the famous Taliesin.

Of course, Urien returns and we are led directly to the next battle in the sequence is that of Argoed Llwyfain (as recorded in the poem of the same name); though the location is not known with any certainty we do have the name of Urien's opponent in this case.
This may be when Urien's two oldest sons (Owein and Elffin) fell out with their father and carved-out petty princedoms for themselves in what is now Galloway and Ayre.
It may be that Urien's supporters had to flee the scene of the assassination and Llywarch saves the great leader's head to ensure that something of the grat man is preserved.

Urien’s son Owain took over the kingdom, and though he was a fierce fighter and a good king, he died after only a few years.
Urien was supposed to have been married to Arthur’s half-sister, Morgan le Fay, while Owain was a knight of the Round Table and had several stories of chivalrous adventures attributed to him.

After the defeat of the Yorkist Kings, Peredur Arueu Dur (Steel Arms) and Gwrgi, by the Bernicians in AD 580, Urien was quick to claim the strategic region around Catraeth (Catterick), before the Saxons of Bernicia and Deira were able to secure the area and unite their two peoples.

Urien is an iconic figure in Welsh legend, having been a 6th century AD king of Rheged, a territory covering most of what is now Galloway, Cumbria and Lancashire.
Some historians have suggested that Urien may have been allied not with his fellow Celts but with the Saxon kings of Deira, and as such, the destruction of the Gododdin chieftains may well have been to his fortune.
In the main image (not shown here), Urien is shown surmouted by the constellation of Orion (a soundalike), but the constellation is upside down, referring to this possible betrayal.

HISTORY OF BRITAIN, 407-597, by Fabio P. Barbieri
The allies are Urien, Gwallawg, Rhydderch and Morcant.
Nennius claims that Urien was the leader of the alliance; but we have seen plenty of reason to believe that Gwallawg was superior in rank - Gwledig as opposed to theyrn - and even that he was the lord of one Owein, probably Urien's son.
Pacified and de-powered by age, there is no reason to believe that Urien did not die in his bed; all the beautiful poems written by later poets, bewailing the great fall of Urien and Rheged, are no more than literary performances, informed by embittered Welsh nationalism.

 Urien’s Voyage
An important early work by a key French thinker, Urien’s Voyage is a fantastic allegorical account of a journey to the Arctic.
From the stagnant teeming waters of the Sargasso to the frozen north, Gide charts in sensual, sumptuous prose the marvellous journey of the Orion and the sexual and moral transformations of its crew.
Largely overlooked on its first UK publication in 1964, Urien’s Voyage is now regarded as a key work, articulating thepowerful tension between sexuality and morality that would preoccupy its author in all his writing to come.

A Knight of the Round Table, Urien, in the earliest Arthurian legends, is said to have met 'Modron' (See Modron), later known as Morgan le Fay, at a ford where he was said to have lain with her.
He is said to have died whilst fighting against 'Mordred' (See Mordred) for 'Arthur' (See Arthur) which we can assume in many of the legends was not to the liking of Modron his mother, adding a further desire to see Arthur defeated.
Urien has also been referred to as the 'King of Rheged', who was said to have a twin sister 'Efrddf', although it should be pointed out that this King did not live at the same time as the historical Arthur who was alive in the sixth-century.
