Urlingford has a rising population of over 700 people and this is expect to grow as proposed new housing developments come on stream.
One match between the counties at the latter end of the 19th century, was played at Fennor just outside Urlingford on the Tipperary side of the border and gave rise to the Tipperary’s long-standing nickname.
Urlingford town centre lies on either side of the main road and was a drab streetscape until a few years ago, when the local community transformed it into a much more attractive setting.

Speculation is rife that the proposed Cork-Dublin motorway will be tolled near Urlingford and Johnstown which will cause traffic to continue using the exsisting road according to Cllr Mary White.
Residents in both towns have had to put up with ever increasing volumes of cars and heavy goods vehicles over the past few years.
The only people who will benefit from the tolling of this motorway are the private sector who will make profits for the next thirty years,” she claimed.

 Urlingford crash claims another life 03-04-06
An accident in Urlingford, Co. Kilkenny, which claimed the life of a woman in her forties on Sunday afternoon (April 2nd), has resulted in a man dying from the injuries sustained in the same crash.
The man is reported to be in his sixties and was the driver of the other vehicle involved in the two-car smash that happened at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
This now brings the tally of deaths to 101 in total for the year.

The Main Street of Urlingford carries the N8 National Primary Road, and is heavily trafficked, but the roads in the vicinity of the site are lightly trafficked.
While comparatively low by national standards, I consider that this density, in the small town of Urlingford, does represent an acceptable and sustainable housing density, especially as other lands in the vicinity are zoned for low density purposes (see Plan map).
In terms of urban design, I feel that the proposal will provide a good urban structure, effectively creating a new streetscape on both adjoining roads, where there is an unfortunate tendency for one-off housing, especially on Lumper Lane.
