Uropygid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A uropygid, commonly known as a "whip scorpion", "vinegarone", or "vinegaroon", is an invertebrate animal belonging to the order Uropygi in the class Arachnida, in the subphylum Chelicerata of the phylum Arthropoda.
The name "uropygid" means "tail rump", referring to the whip-like telson on the end of the pygidium, a small plate made up of the last three segments of the abdominal exoskeleton.
Uropygids are found in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide, usually in underground burrows which they dig with their pedipalps.

These orders are not familiar to many because of their size (although uropygids are large, schizomids and palpigrades are very small), their secretive habits (individuals are typically found in caves, the leaf litter and under rocks and vegetative matter), and their being restricted to the warmer regions of the Earth.
Note that the name "uropygid" literally means "tail rump" and refers to the tail-like telson on the end of the opisthosoma.
Their most obvious difference from uropygids (above) is that the thickened, plate-like exoskeleton that covers the anterior portion of the animal's body (known as the prosoma or cephalothorax) is divided into two separate plates.

Schizomid genera and species are also tropical and subtropical, and the optimal collecting strategy thus overlaps completely that for spiders, amblypygids, and uropygids.
Our sampling strategy will minimally include representatives of each of the four subfamilies; ideally, as many of the 16 genera as possible would be included, with problematic groups like Thelyphonus represented by two or more species, including the type species.
The two major areas of uropygid endemism are in Asia and the Indo-Pacific (12 genera found from India to Fiji) and in the Americas (three genera found from the southern U.S. to Brazil).
