Urpmi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The title of this article begins with a capital letter due to technical restrictions.
urpmi is a Mandriva Linux package management tool for installing, removing, updating and querying software packages of local or remote (networked) media.
It wraps around the package manager rpm with the aim that the user should not have to suffer the often-encountered dependency hell.

 URPMI and RPM Tutorial
The aim of this tutorial is to show the new RPM user (who may or may not be a new Linux user) how to use URPMI and RPM for their own package management, and to help dispel the elitist view that RPMs suck (they don't).
URPMI will automatically download and install mypackage, as well as anything that mypackage depends on.
URPMI works by maintaining a local index of all packages available on remote locations.

Urpmi requires you to setup sources, which are basically links to repositories of software packages either locally or on the internet.
Urpmi can be used either through the command line, or through the GUI Mandrake tools.
The reason for this is that urpmi will automatically update the kernel source, but not the actual kernel (it was designed this way for various reasons).

 URPMI - LinuxQuestions.org Wiki
urpmi is an rpm wrapper which makes installation of rpm files easier for the user.
urpmi, when no options are given, searches the package lists of various media for and finds if the package is installed, and if installed, checks if it is the latest version(as available in the package list of sources).
If the dependencies are not installed (or if they are not the latest version), urpmi then presents the dependencies along with and their total size to the user and asks if they want to continue, installing (and its dependencies).

[mythtv-users] Mandrake URPMI sources..(long winded, sorry!)
For those of your who don't know urpmi is the Mandrake version of Redhats Package Manager (rpm) but with advanced dependency features more similar to Debians apt-get (can be configured to pull from net, and can be updated with new sources).
To set it up the first place to go is the PLF's (Penguin Liberation Front) site and use their "Easy Urpmi" configuror: http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/ It really rocks and I'd imagine the only reason Mandrake hasn't included a great feature like this (in scope) is because of potentially tricky license issues (mplayer, with Quicktime video, etc).
(btw, urpmi is great, but using rpmdrake is probably better since it give you a little more information about things your installing and show version numbers where multiple packages are available) One thing to note is that Thac has set it up so you can install parts without them including necessarily everything.

As with urpmi, it works out the dependancies and tells you if any software that's still installed depends on what you want to uninstall, giving you the chance to abort the procedure or to uninstall the package and those that depend on it.
Urpmi can also be used to upgrade your box to the a newer version of Mandriva Linux.

But despite urpmi being Free Software, it did not find its way into any other distribution, and even those that were originally derived from Mandrake (such as Alt Linux or PCLinuxOS) have been quick to replace urpmi with one of the apt ports for RPM-based distributions.
Besides these basic functions, urpmi is also capable of upgrading or removing packages, displaying information about packages and searching the package database.
In cases where the specified doesn't exist, urpmi will attempt to find a package with a similar name, so even typing errors are taken care of.

[autoupdate] [patch] adding support for mandrake/urpmi 'synthesis' dependcy databases   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Mandrake linux repositories (including the main distribution via ftp and http, cdroms, contribs, plf and mandrake club) support the Mandrake 'urpmi' package selection/installation system, which uses the 'synthesis' file format to provide information required to automatically locate and download RPM dependencies at install time.
This patch allows autoupdate to recognise, download and merge synthesis databases into autoupdate, which is very convenient when users don't have write access to a public repository in order to generate their own autoprovides-*.db files.
The patch uses/requires the 'urpmi' and 'URPM' perl modules, which are available on Mandrake systems as 'urpmi-*.rpm' and 'perl-URPM-*.rpm' respectively.

'urpmi' is the engine which 'rpmdrake' depends upon.
The reason is that urpmi needs to know the exact directory which contains the RPMs and 'rpmdrake' may or may not report the location properly.
Your options are to either: select "Local" as the "Type of media" and enter the full path to the RPM dir, or add the media with 'urpmi.addmedia' (best choice).

the communiqué: Easy Mandrake URPMI   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
One of the many innovations in Mandrake Linux is their automatic package manager, urpmi.
It's a command line tool, but if you've ever been told by some RPM that you need libperl.so and haven't a clue where to find it, this is how you find out.
The mystic voodoo of URPMI lay in the configuration, it's database of RPM archives and the categorization of those archives as distribution, update or extra material, and the arcane syntax of urpmi.addmedia is, quite frankly, a little intimidating to precisely those people the utility is meant to serve.
