  Urticaceae (Nettle Family)
Any large (3 ft tall or more) nettle encountered on the coast is certain to be a form of Urtica dioica (Stinging Nettle).
Despite a similar appearance, the Hedge Nettles found on Montara Mountain are not true nettles, but belong to Lamiaceae, the Mint Family.
Last nettle note: Urtica is apparently also very efficient in the filtering of metals, minerals and waste materials from contaminated water, storing these substances in its plant fibers and cleansing water supplies.

The British species of Stinging Nettle, belonging to the genus Urtica (the name derived from the Latin, uro, to burn), are well known for the burning properties of the fluid contained in the stinging hairs with which the leaves are so well armed.
Our Common Nettle (Urtica dioica, Linn.) is distributed throughout the temperate regions of Europe and Asia: it is not only to be found in distant Japan, but also in South Africa and Australia and in the Andes.
A detailed description of this familiar plant is hardly necessary; its heart-shaped, finelytoothed leaves tapering to a point, and its green flowers in long, branched clusters springing from the axils of the leaves are known to everyone.
