Among the members are stinging nettles; mulberry, fig, and elm trees; hop vines; and the hemp, or marijuana, plant.
All species of the subclass Hamamelidae, apart from the order Urticales, are woody plants ranging from small shrubs to massive trees; the Urticales contain both woody and herbaceous species.
The herbaceous habit and preference for moist environments, particularly in tropical and subtropical lowlands, are unusual in the Hamamelidae and are believed to have been important factors in the diversification of the Urticales.

The Urticales were placed within the subclass Hamamelididae, variously considered close relatives of other orders such as the Hamamelidales, Juglandales, Leitneriales, Fagales, Casuarinales, Myricales, and Daphniphyllales.

The group is weighted in taxa at the higher ranks (Orders with few families and families with few species) and its fossil record extends to the lower Cretaceous (100 million years ago).
Some believe that the group is either marked by high levels of extinction, thereby producing an array taxa well separated, more or less relictual taxa or, perhaps, polyphyletic (an artifical assemblage with elements drawn from several ancestral types.
