The 1662 act lapsed in 1695 leading to a relaxation of government censorship, and in 1710 Parliament enacted the Statute of Anne to address the concerns of English booksellers and printers.
The 1710 act established the principles of authors' ownership of copyright and a fixed term of protection of copyrighted works (fourteen years, and renewable for fourteen more if the author was alive upon expiration).
The 1976 act preempted all previous copyright law and extended the term of protection to life of the author plus 50 years (works for hire were protected for 75 years).

First Amendment Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The Court of Appeals reversed, holding that The Nation's publication of the 300 to 400 words it identified as copyrightable expression was sanctioned as a "fair use" of the copyrighted material under 107 of the Act.
The copy shop acted without permission from the copyright holders, and the main question presented in the case was whether the fair use doctrine obviated the need to obtain such permission.

It was reported in Debian Weekly News based on a comp.compression thread, that the Unisys patent in the USA expired on December 20, 2002 - 17 years and 10 days after it was granted.
Most other sources claim the patent expired in June 2003, 20 years after it was filed, because 35 USC §154(c)(1) specifies that patents subsisting as of six months after the enactment of the Uruguay Round Agreements Act last for the greater of 17 years after grant and 20 years after filing.
According to a statement on Unisys's web site, counterpart patents on LZW in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan have expired in June 2004, and the Canadian patent expired on July 7, 2004.
