  83 Silk Road II
Urumchi has become a large, modern, industrial city and is somewhat watered down in terms of Uygur-Turkestani culture, due to the tremendous influx of Han Chinese.
The museum, however, is a treasure trove for those interested in ancient textiles, many of them of great age in surprisingly good condition, and apparently mostly unpublished and little known to the outside world.
We flew out from Urumchi, passing in five hours from the arid, bracing climate of Turkestan to the lush, muggy green of south China at Guanzhou (Canton), a journey that in Silk Road days would probably have taken at least eight months.

The Mummies of Urumchi by Elizabeth Wayland Barber.
In The Mummies of Urumchi, Elizabeth Barber not only introduces us to some reasonably attractive mummies found in Western China, she also thoroughly involves us in a fascinating detective story as she uncovers all that the mummies and their grave objects can tell us.
Although it distressed the staff at Urumchi Museum to have the accomplishments of their mummies criticized, the Cherchen people didn't make felt particularly well, certainly not well enough to be the sort of herders who regularly erected and deconstructed felt yurts for shelter.

Dinner in Urumchi :: The Memphis Flyer :: the mid-south's news weekly :: Travel Feature :: Travel
We were in a place called Urumchi, which even if you've been to China or always wanted to go to China, you've probably never heard of.
The literature told us that Urumchi was a Mongolian word for "beautiful pastures," but I assumed (correctly) that those pastures had all been replaced by the modern, business town.
But in Urumchi we were tired, just travelers on the way someplace, so we took what the hotel gave us, which was fish.

It appears that the importance of this collection, and some of the pieces in particular, is little known in the West and, I might venture to say, even in China or by the Museum itself.
It is well known from the discovery of ancient manuscripts and other types of textiles that burial in the dry sands of the Taklamakan was unsurpassed among archeological sites in facilitating the preservation of perishable materials.
It is my hope that this brief article may inspire further research into these recently discovered textiles of East Turkestan, so that they may take their deserved place in the literature concerning the history of world textiles.

Health Security in Central Asia: Drug Use, HIV and AIDS
By mapping out where the subtypes are found geographically as well as the risk factors of those infected with the specific subtypes, it is possible to create an accurate picture of where HIV has entered a population and how it is moving.
For example, in Urumchi, the capital of Xinjiang province in China, the virus is very close genetically to the virus in infected individuals in Yunnan.
Almaty was directly on one of these routes, which led to the prediction that there would soon be an HIV explosion in that city, which is otherwise remote from the epidemics that were occurring in neighboring countries.

In the process, she treats readers to a lively story about the ebb and flow of ancient cultures, a story largely deduced from the development of weaving, dyeing, embroidery and fashion.
I was especially impressed by the authors' thorough knowledge of the craft and of the archaeological implications of the textiles preserved with the famous Urumchi mummies of the Tarim Basin of the Taklimakan Desert.
