Uru: Ages Beyond Myst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uru: Ages Beyond Myst is a computer game developed by Cyan Worlds and published by Ubisoft available on a single CD-ROM, featuring several diverse D'ni Ages designed in the style of the Myst game series.
Uru Live was taken offline due to a lack of subscribers in early 2004.

UHS: Uru: Ages Beyond Myst Review
The so-called Uru Live was still in the "prologue" (read: beta) stages, and it was initially limited to a select number of invited players, not to every customer who might have been expecting it or paid for it.
I would argue that if Uru had been designed as a single-player game all along, the interface might have been a bit different -- since there would be no need to show your avatar walking around.
Uru simply played to me as if it was an advertisement or introduction to the on-line game, albeit one with a good 10-20 hours or so of playing time.

With all the effects on, however, Uru looks amazing, and this is further buttressed by the fact the age design, and the animation is quite perfect, in some cases even awe inspiring.
What I’m sadly unable to comment on is the MMOG portion of Uru, dubbed “Uru Live” and which is supposed to be playable by thousands at a time, all exploring ages and solving puzzles in groups.
Overall, Uru is a very unique game, last of a dying breed of puzzle games, and certainly a strange twist for the Myst series.

 Uru: Ages Beyond Myst
Uru is another fully 3D Myst game that lets you play as an explorer drawn to an excavation site at which the ruins of the lost D'ni (pronounced "dinee," with the accent on the first syllable) civilization have been discovered.
Uru is the first game in the Myst series that lets you actually see your character from a third-person view, a character you generate at the start of the game by choosing your appearance and gender.
Uru is also accompanied by a music track from pop musician Peter Gabriel, which plays during the very beginning, as well as the ending credits, though this does not add much to the game.

Uru sows the seeds of this looming conflict, but leaves it unresolved.
Uru has more realistic water effects, and does a much better job with wind, clouds, mist and drifting leaves.
Uru’s underground environments are more weighty and monumental and the air is full of dust.

Eat_My_Shortz' Relto - Uru Single Player and History
The goal of Uru was to release an initial adventure, then to continue augmenting the game as the months and possibly years went on.
Although Uru Live began as a beta (called "Prologue") in December, by February, it became clear to Cyan that the number of subscribers was insufficient.
I believe that Uru is a worthy adventure, not as immersive or mysterious as the original Myst trilogy, but nonetheless a journey through the Ages on a grand scale.

Adventure Gamers : URU: Ages Beyond Myst
URU Live was what URU was supposed to be— until the developers took 80% of the live-game content and turned it into the standalone URU game six months before URU’s release.
But the real problem with URU Live, at least from the point of view of an adventure game critic is this: there’s no game in that game.
The only goal in URU Live seems to be to have no goal, the only rule that there are no rules, and the only purpose being to do whatever you want… so long as you don’t need puzzles, props (other than orange construction cones) or an interactive environment to do it.

 Bring Back Uru Live Petition
When Uru Live was shut down, before being fully implemented, a many years long dream was 'put to bed', and those who had experienced Live were shocked at the loss of so much potential.
The community has remained strong, and with the Until Uru shards, many explorers, old and new, have been waiting patiently in the D'ni cavern for the return of Uru Live.
We call on fans, freinds, and all supportive gamers, to let Cyan and their investors know that the flame of Uru, and the hope for non-violent online gaming, has not died in the hearts of the fans and the gaming community.

Although the release was not officially supported by Cyan, strapped to a giant gnarly disclaimer, and repeatedly stressed as "not being Uru Live," we all knew that Live had returned to us.
Uru gives them the ability to run and jump in a fully-realised world, but at the same time not become isolated from people.

Four Fat Chicks -- Uru: Ages Beyond Myst Review
Uru is not the official Myst 4; rather, it marks the return of Cyan to the development of the D'ni universe as well as the first real massively multiplayer online adventure game.
Cyan began designing Uru for online play some years ago; recall the hue and cry when it was announced not only that the next Myst was to be an online-only game but also available only to those with broadband internet connections.
And Uru seems to have a certain indefinable joie de vivre missing from either Myst or Riven.

GameSpy: Uru: Ages Beyond Myst Review
The real difference between URU and previous Myst titles is that now the stunning graphics and sound aren't quite as unique as they once were.
Many titles look and sound at least as good as URU does, so while you won't find anything to complain about technically, you also won't be as wowed as you once were.
If you were hoping to jump into URU Live, wait until the title is fully finished before you give Ubisoft and Cyan your hard-earned cash.

In announcing Uru: Ages Beyond Myst's cancellation, Cyan Worlds indicated that porting the game's core physics engine proved to be an insurmountable problem for the unidentified company hired to do the conversion.
Uru's Macintosh cancellation may portend difficulty for the possible Mac conversion of another high-profile game that was just released for Windows: Valve Corp.'s Half-Life 2, published by Sierra Entertainment.
Uru: Ages Beyond Myst was announced for the Macintosh this past February, but Cyan Worlds Inc. has been silent about it until now.

In Uru, you're introduced to the conflict between the D'Ni Restoration Council, a group of people bent on exploiting the D'Ni culture, and Yeesha, the daughter of Atrus, who seems to have been dead quite a few years, but who has left messages for you in various places.
Uru Complete Chronicles lasted me well over a month and there is still opportunity to explore certain areas.

The storyline in URU is presented in much the same manner as the original Myst.

For them, the rebirth of "Uru Live"--which brought the celebrated "Myst" franchise into the realm of so-called massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMOs)--is a chance to once again immerse themselves in a game about which many feel unusually passionate.
That "Uru Live" has life at all is probably surprising to some.
That means the new "Uru Live" universe could well be populated with buildings, trees, sculptures, landscapes, oceans and other user-created objects, all of which, GameTap developers hope, will enhance the in-world environment.

Uru was trumpeted as an Online Game, which to many Mysties broke with tradition and pitched the game at a different, dare I say 'class' of player - you know, the destructive kind that aren't content until every last foe is dismembered, every last enemy building blasted to smithereens.
