A perusal of the lyric sheet reveals that many of the songs are individually verbose enough to fuel an entire punk album, although Gabriel's complex imagery obviously wouldn't fit the genre.
Gabriel's approach to recording is probably correct for his age: once you're past your youthful confidence and your initial burst of inspiration has dried up, the best way to produce a great album is to grind it out.

Peter Gabriel's So may have been a bit more mainstream and accessible than his previous albums, but i still like it.
In this album, Peter doesn't use his favorite toy, the vocoder, in order to give a sense of reality to his lyrics; the results are the best words and the clearest images that he's ever created in his whole solo career (of course, I'm not including Supper's ready, Firth of fifth and The Lamia).
Peter also contributes his best vocal performance of the album, both in singing and in his lyrics (which I guess are about being in a rain of blood, perhaps after a heavy battle or something like that).
