Because Usagi Yojimbo is a creator-owned comic and Stan Sakai has complete and sole ownership of the character, Miyamoto Usagi has been able to appear in occasional short stories published by companies other than the one currently publishing his series.
Usagi has also appeared several times in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the comic, both of the animated series, and the toy line), and the Turtles have appeared in Usagi Yojimbo as well.
Usagi Yojimbo has appeared in a four-part episode in the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon as well as in the 1990's version.

Usagi's infiltration of the slaver gang running the slave town shows that he has guile as well as physical skill, and though he is once again put into the familiar role of traveling protector, Sakai always mixes the way he gets involved and the way he acts just enough to keep it interesting.
Usagi's musings to himself on how to punish Gen for his "shortcuts" in the beginning of "A Promise in the Snow" is hilarious, and pays off with a great gag at the end of "Snakes and Blossoms" as well.
Usagi once again teams with Gen the bounty hunter and Tomoe the samurai, finding allies in the young Lord Noriyuki, but at the same time, he can't fully trust any of them, as they would use the sword for their own benefit as well.

Both made their start in fl and white comics, of course, and Usagi's success can be at least partly attributed to the fl and white comics explosion spawned by the TMNT book.
Usagi also had a guest shot or two in the Turtles comics, and I've read that Turtle creators Eastman and Laird were pals with Stan Sakai, which presumably led to Usagi's inclusion in the Turtles cartoon as well as becoming part of the TMNT action figure line.
The problem here is that the Usagi Yojimbo action figure isn't wearing the costume that he had in the TMNT cartoon.

Not only are the stories strong, but the book provides a good look at where Usagi has come from and where he is going.
It doesn't include anything about Gen, Usagi's friend and sometime companion, but to make up for that, the next book is called "Gen's Story" and deals almost entirely with him.
If you can't find Book 1 easily (no surprise, it's been out of print for quite a while), this may be the best way to check whether this series is for you before spending all that time looking for the out-of-print books.
