		An illusion is a distortion of a sensory perception.
		Unlike an hallucination, which is a sensory experience in the absence of a stimulus, an illusion describes a distortion of a perception so it is understood and interpreted differently.
		These "illusionations" are not hallucinations in the strict sense of the word since they are not novel fabrications of the mind but rather a distortion of what is seen and heard.

		If you have ever gone to a science center which has a display of optical illusions, you might have watched people spending large amounts of time staring at and attempting to understand why they were perceiving the illusions that they were.
		One optical illusion that holds an interest for me is the kind that uses background objects, lines, or other features to alter the appearance of foreground objects.
		There is one special illusion that has held my interest since childhood, and that is the illusion of the apparent increased size of the moon when seen near the horizon.

		Step 2: Still sitting with your eyes about 8 inches from the animation, now look at a point about 1 inch from the left hand edge of the screen and note which direction the red dots are now moving.
		The brain is trying to do that in this illusion; it's incorrectly binding color and motion so it can tell us that all the red dots are moving in the same direction throughout our "world," in this case the animation display.
		The illusion breaks down if you stand several feet away from the monitor, and watch the illusion (a long mouse cable or a friend is necessary to do this.)

		This illusion was discovered in 1860 by physicist and scholar JC Poggendorff, editor of Annalen der Physik und Chemie, after receiving a letter from astronomer F. Zöllner.
		In his letter, Zöllner described an illusion he noticed on a fabric design in which parallel lines intersected by a pattern of short diagonal lines appear to diverge (Zöllner’s illusion).
		Whilst pondering this illusion, Poggendorff noticed and described another illusion resulting from the apparent misalignment of a diagonal line; an illusion which today bears his name.
