UseModWiki - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
UseModWiki is a wiki engine developed from 1999 to 2000 by Clifford Adams in the Perl programming language.
It is licensed under the GNU General Public License.
Clifford Adams started developing UseModWiki in 1999 for his 1991-to-1999 Usenet Moderation Project (Usemod) from the code of AtisWiki 0.3 by Markus Denker.

Wiki software implements the simple idea that Web pages should be easy, even trivial, to create, and that anyone reading the page should be able to correct, improve, revise and add to the page.
UseModWiki is a single Perl script that can be deployed on any Web server that supports CGI scripting.
It keeps its data in simple flat files (no database back end required) using modules that are part of the standard Perl installation.

UseModWiki is a monolithic Perl script and as such was very easy to install and configure.

Now UseModWiki uses db files for page storage, I'm not sure I remember enough Perl to write a database extraction utility for this purpose.

Its original goal was to focus on collaborative hypermedia but topics have ranged from intellectual property to cyberpunk to the confusion of URIs.
In particular, it has influenced much of the design of UseModWiki.
Because of its role as a community about communities, it has become the launching point for various other wiki-based projects, and a central resource for the wider wiki community.

 UseMod Wiki: UseModWiki/License
UseModWiki can be freely distributed under the GNU Public License.
One issue with licensing the contents of a wiki website is that licenses such as FDL require the source code format to follow an open specification, and the editable text format for wiki pages are defined by the wiki program.
This is fine as long as the website runs an unmodified UseModWiki script, since it is available under the GPL.

UseModWiki -   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The first wiki to use UseModWiki's test versions was Clifford Adams's own usemod.com wiki, which had been running on AtisWiki since October 11, 1999.
The second wiki to use UseModWiki, the MeatballWiki created by Adams and Sunir Shah and dedicated to online communities, was also installed on that same usemod.com Web site on April 24, 2000.
This is due to the relatively little computing power required (as compared to other wiki implementations such as TWiki or MediaWiki) and its ease of installation.

UseModWiki runs as a Perl CGI script with the source contained in a single file, and it's very easy to install.
TWiki has a lot of features that are more oriented towards 'groupware' applications (things like fine-level user authorization etc.), but is harder to get working.

I kept putting off a reply to your email since I wanted to give you some good news (like a release date), but real/non-computing life has been rather chaotic recently.
(Fortunately, much of the chaos has had good results, but it still takes a lot of time away from wiki work.) I recently announced on the main UseModWiki that a beta testing "0.97" should be released by the end of the year.
