The User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is a minimal message-oriented transport layer protocol that is currently documented by IETF RFC 768.
Since UDP is stateless and a UDP sender may not solicit replies, the source port is optional.
The port fields are followed by a mandatory length field specified as bytes of the UDP datagram including the data.

UDP is a minimal message-orientated transport layer protocol that is currently documented in IETF RFC 768.
UDP provides no guarantees to the upper layer protocol for message delivery and a UDP sender retains no state on UDP messages once sent (for this reason UDP is sometimes called the Unreliable Datagram Protocol).
The Datagram Congestion Control Protocol (DCCP) is being designed as a partial solution to this potential problem by adding end host TCP-friendly congestion control behavior to high-rate UDP streams such as streaming media.

The source and destination port fields are 16-bit fields that identify the sending and receiving process.
If an application requires a high degree of reliability, a protocol such as the Transmission Control Protocol may be used instead.

In computer networking, the Reliable User Datagram Protocol (RUDP) is a transport layer protocol designed at Bell Labs for the Plan 9 operating system.
It aims to provide a solution where UDP is too primitive because guaranteed-order packet delivery is desirable, but TCP adds too much complexity/overhead.
