Topic: User agent string

  user-agent strings
This is for statistical purposes, the tracing of protocol violations, and automated recognition of user agents for the sake of tailoring responses to avoid particular user agent limitations.
Agents derived from a mozilla.org source release shall use the token Mozilla/N.M as the first element of their User-Agent string.
Since many agents derived from the mozilla.org source release will include other components, possibly significant ones (for example, crypto) it will be useful to identify not only the baseline release (the version of the source that mozilla.org puts out) but also more specific information about the derived version.

User agent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A user agent is the client application used with a particular network protocol; the phrase is most commonly used in reference to those which access the World Wide Web.
Web user agents range from web browsers to search engine crawlers ("spiders"), as well as screen readers and braille browsers used by people with disabilities.
When Internet users visit a web site, a text string is generally sent to identify the user agent to the server.

How the visiting browser is identified
Some user agents have very similar or the same keywords, so you need to be strategic about how you define your agent strings.
This is an important concept to understand, so let’s study a real scenario where a browser’s user agent string may match more than one of your defined user agent matching strings.
A typical user agent string reported by that browser would be: "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows NT)".

User interface: 'o' for options, search for 'user-agent' and set string to the desired value.
For the most part, this serves little purpose to users themselves, other than to pop up annoying messages suggesting you switch browsers (often to one that's not appropriate, supported, or suitable for your platform).
The executive who finds this string on the weblog report realizes that this is the straight dope -- she's not seeing a doctored or sanitized report.

IEBlog : The IE7 User-Agent String   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Plus, since 90% of IE users probably don't know what a user agent string is and shouldn't need to, such an option would only create confusion.
There's a reason they keep blogging on this thing-- because sites are still so stupid that the user agent string breaks when you change the number 6 to 7 (and they've had this in for over a year now!).
The User Agent String Utility is useful but would be better if it was designed as a button on IE7 that would refresh the page to the displayed website with an IE6 string.

Dan's Web Tips: Brand-X Browsers -- User Agent Strings
Whenever anyone gives statistics purporting to identify what percentage of users are using which browsers, this is (if it's not just somebody's wild guess) probably taken from analysis of the user agent identifiers of visitors to a Web site.
So it seems like we're stuck for the indefinite future with user agent strings that get further and further away from honestly describing the browser name and version they represent, and contain increasing amounts of fossilized deadwood that can't be removed because some site, somewhere, allegedly depends on its presence.
This credit union site tells many users that their browser is "nonstandard", then gives them a link to enter the site anyway; however, in some cases, this link doesn't work (I think it depends on cookies being enabled).

Opera for Symbian user agent strings
This page is a brief update to the original Opera browser user agent string information in the reference section of this website and includes new user agent strings taken from current Symbian devices.
This is because current versions hide the user agent options from the browser preferences so the only way to change strings is to edit a configuration file manually.

 Tripod - Handcrafted
The part of this we are interested in at the moment is the User Agent string.
The problem (you knew there had to be a problem, right?) is that these strings contain a lot of information, presented in a not-quite-standard format.
This technique involves checking to see, not which specific browser the users are running, but rather whether they're running any browser that supports the particular feature you want to use.

Typically enough information is present in the string to identify the type and version of the browser and which other browsers it purports to be compatible with.
Note the amount of detail included in the example strings: Operating system, Hardware platform and even language preference can be pulled from some user agent strings.
Taken individually this UA data is pretty much worthless due to user agent switching but over large groups it is meaningful and worth collecting.

This user-agent is used by me (Tomas Schild, personal site - ODP editor profile) as a contribution to quality control of the Open Directory, of which I am an editor.
The reason for this is that there are brain-dead browser-detection scripts in use that do not behave intelligently when the user-agent is not detected to be one of a few popular browsers.

The "rv" string is what indicates the Gecko version, another indication that they are using the 1.0 branch as a base (Firefox 1.0 shipped with the rv set to 1.7.5).
User agent strings are getting rather inscrutable these days, if the number in the Gecko token has nothing to do with the Gecko version, but the "rv" number does, and the Firefox token doesn't indicate what Firefox version it's based on, and there's no Netscape token even though this is a Netscape version.
They are asking on the "focus issues" page for All Users to visit pages that they do with their primary browser, and report to them any that look inconsistent in the AOL browser.

 Customizing the Netscape 6 Browser
By including your company identifier as part of the user agent string, you or other companies can track the number of times Internet web sites are accessed by web browsers that you've customized.
For new users who are installing Netscape 6 for the first time, your customized bookmarks remain visible even if the user subsequently upgrades to a later version.
However, users who are upgrading from a previous version of Navigator or Communicator to the version you are providing will not get your customized bookmarks because, for upgraders, Netscape preserves their existing set of bookmarks.

 Understanding User-Agent Strings
This string indicates which browser you're using, its version number, and details about your system, such as operating system and version.
The user-agent string can contain optional details called tokens, which must be surrounded by parentheses and vary among programs.
For example, if a string value is added to the Post-Platform key, the name appears after the platform token in the user-agent string.
