  Yet Another Rendition of Linux
The new version of Linux, called UserLinux, is being proposed by open-source sage Bruce Perens, who claims to have the backing of some of the world's largest companies, across a number of business sectors.
UserLinux, which will be paid for with multimillion-dollar donations from Perens' corporate backers, will be free for unlimited use, and will be certified by large computer makers.
The companies sponsoring UserLinux are eager for an alternative to Microsoft products, which they see as expensive, buggy, vulnerable to viruses and difficult to deploy and maintain, said Perens, speaking at the first meeting of the Desktop Linux Consortium.

UserLinux was created last year in order to provide an alternative to the increasing costs and lock-in strategies of the leading enterprise-orientated Linux vendors, such as Red Hat and Novell's Suse Linux.
UserLinux streamlines Debian's default set of applications in order to make the platform easier to support and develop for: the desktop environment uses the GNOME user interface and associated applications and OpenOffice.org productivity tools, and the server configuration uses Apache and Postfix.
UserLinux is also relying on the Linux Standards Base (LSB), a project to ensure that Linux distributions remain compatible with one another, to ensure that applications run on the platform.

 Advogato: Blog for mjg59
Userlinux is intended to "Bring free software to businesses of all sizes" - the main argument here seems to be that Debian is a bit too anarchic for business to like, and so a rebranded and stripped down version with some sort of commercial backing would probably appeal rather more[2].
My issue with Userlinux is Bruce's repeated insinuations that Userlinux is giving back ("We're trying to help"), while at the same time blaming Debian for Userlinux's failure to release ("There is nothing else but the Debian release on the critical path.").
Userlinux currently does nothing to benefit Debian, and its stated aims suggest that that's not going to change in the future.

UserLinux is based on the Debian implementation of Linux, which is perhaps the purest and broadest implementation of Linux with the most enthusiasm among the hacker community.
