Okayama Prefecture was formerly divided into Bitchu Province, Bizen Province, and Mimasaka Province until the Meiji Restoration.
Okayama Prefecture borders Hyogo Prefecture, Tottori Prefecture and Hiroshima Prefecture.
On November 1, 2004, the towns of Ushimado, Oku, and Osafune from Oku District merged to form the city of Setouchi.

Okayama is a pleasant and very livable-seeming (well, I had just come from Tokyo) city in the Kansai on the way from Osaka to Hiroshima.After I left Ushimado, I spent a night in Okayama before heading back to the wilds of Tokyo.
Okayama is the prefectural capital of the like-named prefecture, and that government was the sponsor of the International Villas at Hattoji and Ushimado.
Okayama prefecture clearly has a bunch of powerful Dietmen, because the evidence of rampant government spending is all over the prefecture -- whether it's the International Villas, the incredible number of nearly-unused highways crisscrossing the area, or the museums, they've got the funding.

Okayama is a central rail link for both regular and shinkansen bullet trains.
At Ushimado and Koshihata, you have to stop in and pick up the keys at the town hall (or in Koshihata's case, the town "house") on the way; the villa office will send you a fax with complete instructions.

Ushimado, part of Okayama, was the landing place of a delegation that traveled from Busan through the island of Sushima to the Seto inland sea waterway for its overland journey towards Edo.
Okayama’s nature and climate is good enough to be called, “Heaven’s Blessing.” In the north, the Chugoku mountains, in the south, the Seto inland sea, and in between plateaus and plains have developed so that the four seasons are distinct.

From July 2002 to July 2005 I lived in the town of Ushimado, Okayama in Japan, where I taught English at the junior high school, as well as the three primary schools.
Suffice it to say that Ushimado is a beautiful town with wonderful people and I really enjoyed getting to know my students.
