Yazid's governor, ibn Ziyad, is said by the Shi'a to have sent an army of 30,000 men against Husayn.
The leader of the force, Umar ibn Sa'ad, finally agreed to Husayn's proposal that the siege be lifted so that Husayn, his family, and his companions could leave Iraq.
Casualties included Abbas, the half-brother and flag-bearer of Husayn, Ali Akbar, son of Husayn, Qasim, son of Hasan ibn Ali and nephew of Husayn, and Aun and Muhammad, the sons of Zainab bint Ali.

Uthman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uthman became caliph after the assassination of caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab in 644.
Some scholars therefore count Uthman as the first of the Umayyad dynasty, though the scholarly consensus is that Muawiyah is the first.
According to the Sunni account of Uthman, he was married to two of Muhammad's daughters at separate times, earning him the name Dhun Nurayn or the "Possesor of Two Lights." In this he was supposed to outrank Ali ibn Abu Talib, who had married only one of Muhammad's daughters.

Jam' Al-Qur'an - The Uthmanic Recension of the Qur'an
By the time Uthman became caliph, although the other codices were gaining prominence in the various provinces, this codex had in fact receded into the private custody of one of the widows of the Prophet of Islam who simply kept it indefinitely in her personal care.
Ibn Rafi made it plain he was writing the text at her express command and it is specifically referred to as a separate codex by Ibn Abi Dawud.
This variant reading must have been recorded by Ubayy ibn Ka'b before the recension of the Qur'an under Uthman as his codex is definitely stated to have been one of those destroyed by Uthman and it is probable that it was so inscribed in the others as well.
