Ussuriland, the southernmost part of the Russian Far East, has especially diverse flora and fauna, with a strange mixture of Siberian and Oriental species and lots of endemics.
Our Fund has done a lot to protect the unique insects of Ussuriland, but there is much more to be done.
For many years, the main concern of environmentalists in Ussuriland was habitat loss in the beautiful forests of the area, particularly in mixed forest zone.

 BirdQuest | AMURLAND & USSURILAND
If the very idea of hunting out some of the most sought-after birds in Eurasia arouses instant excitement then this is the journey for you – Siberia will be a magic place where many of the everyday avian inhabitants are species which we tend to think of solely as rare vagrants.
This very special region, the southernmost part of the so-called ‘Russian Far East’, is bordered to the south and east by the Sea of Japan, to the north by the great Amur River and to the west by the Ussuri River and Manchuria.
Not only is Ussuriland the richest area in Siberia for birds (and indeed for other animals and for plants), but it also holds many of the most sought-after specialities.

 A. S. Loukashkin: On the Avifauna of North Manchuria
With respect to Tengmalm's owl, which was described from South Ussuriland, it is known that no ornithologist has so far secured actual specimens of this owl from Manchuria.
It had been placed in the lists of Manchurian birds by certain authors only on the basis of its distribution in the south-western parts of the Altai Mountains and Dzungaria as well as in Ussuriland.
Thanks to this discovery, North Manchuria may now be included, without any doubt, in the limits of distribution of Tengmalm's owl.
