Despite several controversies that claim that the Taj Mahal was designed by an Italian Geronimo Veroneo, or a French silversmith Austin de Bordeaux, the first real evidence of the architect's identity emerged in the 1930s when a seventeenth century manuscript called the Diwan-i-Muhandis was found to mention the Taj Mahal.

Architect of the Taj   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
There is a controversy about the architect of the Taj Mahal and the names of Veroneo and Ustad Isa Afandi among others are often suggested with fanciful stories.
Various Persian manuscripts on the construction of Taj Mahal unanimously mention Ustad Isa Afandi as Naqsha-Nawis (draftsman) and not as Muhandis (Engineer-architect) Lahauri too doesnot mention his name as architect of the Taj Mahal and there seems to be no doubt that he was employed as draftsman.
Despite all these contradictory testimonials we must not forget that the Taj in effect is essentially the work of Shah Jahan himself, passionate cordinator of the suggestions and projects provided by his artists whether they were French, Turkish, Indian or Italian.

The mausoleum grows, with its huge dome, which Isa calls "the tear of Allah," and as it does, so does his love for Jahanara, creating the second love story of the novel, one which is far more difficult and fraught with peril than the love of Jahangir and Mumtaz.
Vivid battle scenes, as the emperor fights the Persians to the north and the Deccans to the south, alternate with battles for control of the throne and the battle of Jahanara and Isa to sustain their love.
The story of Jahanara and Isa, while certainly exciting and "romantic" (and, for hardcore realists, probably "implausible"), allows the history of the period to unfold more completely so that the reader can see their love through the prism of the times.
