Ustinov College is the third largest college of Durham University.
Founded as the Graduate Society it became a college in 2003 and was named after one of the university's former Chancellors, the late Sir Peter Ustinov.
The college arms are: Ermine a Cross formy quadrate Gules on a Chief indented Sable between three Lions rampant Argent two Lozenges Or.

His father, Iona (Jona) von Ustinov, known to his friends as "Klop" (bedbug), was of Russian and German descent, and had served as a German fighter pilot in World War I, worked as a press officer at the German Embassy in London in the 1930s, and was a reporter for a German news agency.
Ustinov was educated at Westminster School and had a difficult and uncertain childhood because of his parents' constant bickering and personality clashes.
Ustinov is referenced in the Sheryl Crow song "There Goes the Neighborhood" along with Sunshine Sally (Sally Strouth), a children's show host in west Texas during the 1970's.

Ustinov burst into laughter and promptly gave a rendition of one of his music hall numbers, dance included much to everyone's astonishment and told me how grateful he had been to the Player's for the work it had given him.
Ustinov was a true citizen of the world as we all should be, and had a great love and warmth for his fellow man as we all should have.

The castle is actually one of the University’s 16 colleges, which spread out in three main groups across the city giving the advantages of a collegiate, civic and campus university as well as a handy defence against invading Vikings.
The oldest colleges are on ‘the Peninsula’, along ‘the Bailey’, and they appeal particularly to those who admire their architecture and tradition (if not their facilities) and to raging Sloanes.
The Hill Colleges, near the science departments were mostly built in the 60s and tend to be more progressive.

The long-planned 16th college of the University of Durham has taken a step closer with the appointment of the architects Gotch, Saunders and Surridge.
The traditional Durham colleges have large shared dining facilities serving three meals a day, but an increasing number of applicants are attracted to the self-catering option, and the new college will increase choice.
Other buildings in the total package are more rooms for Ustinov College at Howlands, and a new accommodation complex to replace a 1960s structure at Parson’s Field, off Old Elvet, which will be used by St Cuthbert’s Society.

The new college for postgraduate students, Ustinov College, at the time of the audit consisted of facilities spread across a number of separate buildings, and so had a significantly different character from other colleges at the University.
All students belong to a college and all undergraduates have a personal tutor (part-time postgraduate students have the option of belonging to a college, although this is not a requirement).
The University and college libraries worked well in terms of both opening hours and the availability of books and journals, although on the newer Queen's Campus there had been a problem of insufficient numbers of key texts; this was currently being addressed after being raised by student representatives.
