Ut queant laxis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The use of Ut queant laxis to name the notes is usually attributed to Guido of Arezzo.
Ut is now mostly replaced by do due to the latter's open sound, probably inspired by the word Dominus (Lord).
It is notable in that the first syllable of each line gave its name to a successive note of the major scale in solfege, as each line begins with the successively higher note, until the last line, which returns to "sol".

He developed new technologies for teaching, including the staff notation and the "do-re-mi" scale, in which the name of the single notes were taken from the initial syllables of the seven verses of a hymn, Ut queant laxis (at the beginning, "do" was called "ut").
The simple placement of lines allowed those reading musical notation to know where on the scale a particular note should be sung, moving from a relative scale (useful to those needing a reminder of where to sing) to an absolute scale.

 Hexachords - Basic System
For the purpose he used the hymn Ut queant laxis [ 2 ], which like Hucbald's chant has a range of C-A, and exhibits a protus or Dorian modality, with D as the final or point of repose.
From "gamma ut" comes the term gamut, referring to the full range of the system and to its complete set or network of hexachords; more generally, for example, we speak of "running the gamut" in the sense of covering a full range of possibilities.
In the untransposed version of the gamut, the "rounded-B" or fa-sign invariably indicates that the affected note is to be sung as fa (i.e.

The Secret Bible Codes of Ut Queant Laxis
The first note, "UT-quent laxis," is defined in Webster's Dictionary as "the Gamut of dramatic emotion from grief to joy," and "the whole series of recognized musical notes." It has a frequency of 396 cycles per second, and is also associated with a "magnetic field strength equal to 105 power gauss," or 100,000.
Later in history 'Ut' was replaced by the more easily singable 'Do,' and another syllable, si or ti, was added at the end, giving the scale of seven syllables called do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti, which forms the present basic system of singing names for the tones of the scale.

Dolmetsch Online - Music Theory Online - Staffs, Clefs & Pitch Notation
Ut Queant Laxis Resonare Fibris is the first line of a hymn in honour of St. John the Baptist.
The Roman Breviary divides it into three parts and assigns the first, "Ut queant laxis", etc., to Vespers, the second, "Antra deserti teneris sub annis", to Matins, the third, "O nimis felix, meritique celsi", to Lauds, of the feast of the Nativity of St. John (24 June).
UT has been generally replaced by DO(H) - the use of DO in place of UT was proposed in 1673 by Giovanni Maria Bonocini - because of the open sound of the latter.

The hymn was for vespers on the feast of St. John the Baptist, and the lines of the hymn, in Latin, read like this: UT queant laxis REsonare fibris: MIre gestorum,FAmuli tuorum: SOlve polluti LAbii reatus: Sancte Joannes.
He solved this by using a yellow line to indicate ut, or do, and a red line to indicate fat Now, melodies could be written down, since the exact pitch and progression from tone to tone could be indicated on the staff.
The name "ut" was dropped because it was difficult to pronounce and "do" ("a deer, a female deer") took its place.

 Solmisation - netlexikon

Achmed, a firstborn, was attuned to ut, the first note of the scale.
This is where we get Ut [later changed to Do] Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, and La, sometimes also called Ela.
He is credited with the invention of solmization, assigning syllables for each of the six tones of the hexachord to the first syllable of each verse of the St. John Hymn, a musical piece that was very well known at the time.

 St. John the Baptist
Should we ask just when the Precursor went into the wilderness, an old tradition echoed by Paul Warnefried (Paul the Deacon), in the hymn, "Ut queant laxis", composed in honour of the saint, gives an answer hardly more definite than the statement of the Gospel: "Antra deserti teneris sub annis.
Luke tell us only that "the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit; and was in the deserts, until the day of his manifestation to Israel" (i, 80).

[Sex voces musicae in marg.]

 Guido d'Arezzo
The syllable "ut" is still used in France but "do" is used almost everywhere else.
The first phrase of the hymn begins on c and each of the other phrases begins one scale degree higher than its predecessor.
Guido discovered that using syllables to teach chants made it possible for his singers to learn new chants more quickly.
