This county lies in the north-eastern part of Lithuania, and consists of the municipalities of Utena, Anyksciai, Zarasai, the Ignalina and Moletai Districts and the city of Visaginas.
Utena is the oldest city, dating back to 1261; the "youngest", in both the county and in Lithuania as a whole, is Visaginas, which was founded only in 1975.
The most interesting museums in the county are: the Lithuania Ethno Cosmic Centre at Kuloniai Village, and the memorials to the classic Lithuanian authors A. Baranauskas and A. Vienuolis-Zukauskas and J. Biliunas in Anyksciai.

Utena District is an area of heights, hills, thick woods and picturesque lakes situated in the North-western part of the Aukđtaičiř Highlands of Baltijos group of hills, in the basin of the river Đventoji.
Ethnographically it belongs to East Aukđtaitija, administratively – to the Utena County.
The area of the Utena District is 1229 sq.km.

In Utena region land is less favourable for development of agriculture and situation of the labour market is rather complicated, compared to other Lithuanian regions.

It is known that in 1700 a wooden church was built and in 1905 that church was replaced by the parson and his parishioners with a new brick neo-baroque church with two towers.

It was King Mindaugas who first mentioned the name of Utena in his letter to the knights of the Sword written in 1261.
