During the ‘Utheemu dynasty’ (1153 – 1691), the high office of the sultan was institutionalized and tenets of democracy in the form of ‘consent of the ruled’ began to become more evident in the sultans rulings.
After an abortive attempt at a republican form of government in1953, the sultanate was finally abolished in a 1968, and a republic, with executive, legislative and legal branches of government was established.

Muhammad Thakurufaanu was the son of Khatheeb (island chief) Husain of Utheemu in Thiladhummathi Atoll and Lady Amina Dio.
To bring an end to this, Muhammad Thakurufaanu, left the Maldive Islands with his brothers Ali and Hasan to Minicoy Island off the coast of India in the Laccadive Archipelago.
The Utheemu brothers along with other Maldivians who were determined to die for their country and faith, slew the whole Portuguese garrison and gained independence for the country from its invaders.

The first king Muhammed Thakurufaan of the Utheemu Dynasty, in the Maldives, was proclaimed king in the year 1573 AD.
The dynasty was named after the northern Maldives island of Utheemu, birthplace of Thakurufaan.
Eleven more sultans ruled during this dynastic period which ended in 1692.
