UTICA -- Reduced costs, new opportunities and, eventually, expanded services are a few goals of the proposed merger between the AAA Auto Club of Utica & Central New York and the Automobile Club of New York, headquartered in New York City.
Dennis Crossley, president and chairman of the Automobile Club of New York, said one of the first things to focus on after the merger vote is opening a call center in the Utica region.
He eventually left his wheel works company in Utica to pave the way for formation of General Motors Corp. The Utica club claimed to be the first to be founded in the parent Automobile Association of America, a fact disputed by the Buffalo club, founded a month earlier.

UTICA -- The AAA Auto Club of Utica -- founded more than 100 years ago -- would be merged with the much larger Automobile Club of New York under a plan coming up for vote next month.
Under a merger, the Automobile Club of New York would assume the assets and liabilities of the local offices, according to Wednesday's legal notice in the Observer-Dispatch.
The Utica club claimed to be the first to be founded in the parent Automobile Association of America, a fact disputed by the Buffalo club, founded a month earlier.
