Utopia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although some authors have described their utopia with some sorts of practicality, the term utopia has become stereotyped as reflecting notions that are too optimistic and idealistic for practical application; and readers will often mislabel their concepts as impossible or void.
Religious utopias, perhaps expansively described as a garden of delights, existence free of worry amid streets paved with gold, in a bliss of enlightenment enjoying nearly godlike powers, are often a reason for perceiving benefit in remaining faithful to a religion, and an incentive for converting new members.

Socialist and communist utopias generally revolve around an equalitarian distribution of goods, frequently with the total abolition of money, and citizens only doing work which they enjoy and which is for the common good, leaving them with ample time for the cultivation of the arts and sciences.
Capitalist utopias of this sort are generally based on perfect market economies, in which the market has reached an impossible and perfect balance between demand and supply and there is no market failure -- or the issue is never addressed.

Rorty's substitution of utopia for the epistemological frustrations of theory suggests that it functions as much as a mask as an alternative and cannot be considered an innocent figure, even in his own vocabulary.
According to Marin, utopia is the ideological critique of the dominant ideology of the historical moment of its formulation (10), or an ideology in figural form.
Just as Marin's 16th-18th century utopias reflect the contradictions of the transition from a feudal economy to a capitalist one (10), the utopian movements characteristic of the nineteenth century are a form of overt or implicit romantic resistance to the contaminated, manufactured desires of burgeoning consumer society.

In both novels the failure or destruction of utopia is connected to slavery and its racist sequelae: the utopian possibilities of the late 60s--both 1860s and 1960s--are defeated by the intractability of slavery's legacy.
Utopia however is always-already contaminated by slavery: even at their best, the slaves' lives are only almost livable, and nothing like autonomous or free.
Utopia in postmodernity is multiply defeated and discredited, yet it persists in the form not only of desire for elimination of domination, inequality and oppression but also of desire for transcendence itself.

Utopia Limited is an original, engaging account of how postmodernism emerged from the political and cultural upheaval of the 1960s.
She identifies the pivots where the modern was superseded by the nascent postmodern: where modern mass culture was replaced by postmodern popular culture, modern egalitarianism morphed into postmodern populism, and modern individualism fragmented into postmodern politics and cultures of subjectivity.
Providing extensive annotated bibliographies on both the sixties and postmodernism, Utopia Limited is an invaluable resource for understanding the impact of that tumultuous decade on the present.

Utopia Limited is the last but one of the Savoy Opera series.
It tells the story of a tropical paradise, ruled over by an indulgent yet all powerful king (well, almost all powerful!) which is "improved" by the adoption of western style political, social and economic reforms, introduced by a foreign power for well meaning but misguided reasons.
Gilbert's satire on British Imperialism still resonates today as western style democracy and economic reforms are being established in the Middle East, and the former Eastern Europe, and radical reforms to to "improve" all areas of the public services are taking place here at home.
