 The Psalter
The psalter was the ancestor of all the books of the divine office, including that later medieval invention for the laity, the book of hours.
The psalter contained texts for declaiming aloud, and was chanted repeatedly by the clergy in the course of their liturgical duties.
Psalters organised in these ways are referred to as ferial psalters, in reference to the church feasts which they followed.

Other books associated with the Rheims school include the Utrecht Psalter (picture:gallery), which was perhaps the most important of all Carolingian manuscripts, and the Bern Physiologus, the earliest Latin edition of the Christian allegorical text on animals.
The expressive animations of the Rheims school, in particular the Utrecht Psalter with its naturalistic expressive figurine line drawings, would have influence on northern medieval art for centuries to follow, into the Romanesque period.
From the Utrecht Psalter, 9th C. Naturalistic and energetic figurine line drawings were entirely new, and were to become the most influential innovation of Carolinian art in later periods.

The Utrechts Psalter is generally regarded as the most important manuscript from the hey-day of the so-called School of Rheims.
Each of the 150 psalms and sixteen canticles in the Utrecht Psalter is preceded by a spectacular and dynamic pen drawing that brings the contents to life in a manner astonishing even to modern eyes.
Because of the method of illustration in the Utrecht Psalter, in which text and image are closely interwoven, the drawings cannot be understood without taking the text of the psalm as the starting-point.

In addition to the extraordinary expressive power of the drawings, we are impressed with the artist’s continuous effort to follow the text as closely as possible and marvel at the sheer wealth of symbolism in his illustrations.
The Utrecht Psalter has influenced the evolution of European art throughout the ages, not only in the field of illumination but also in other areas of Carolingian art.

According to Schiller, representations of the christus patiens, such as that in the Utrecht Psalter, are testaments to the Late Carolingian doctrine of the Sacrament (103).
As a result of the Utrecht Psalter being a product of Rheims, it may therefore be assumed that this particular school is the author of the christus patiens image.
The image of the dead Christ is for the first time represented in the Utrecht Psalter and therefore, we may conclude that this depiction, along with the serpent and the awakened dead are uniquely Carolingian.

Many of the more ancient psalteria which survive, as for example the "Psalterium Aureum", of St. Gall and the "Utrecht Psalter", both of them probably of the ninth century, are very richly illuminated or illulstrated–a fact which has probably had much to do with their preservation.
The repetition of the entire Psalter was, as many necrologies and monastic custumals show, a favourite form of suffrage for the dead.
