ExxonMobil Norway - Exploration - Utsira High
The Utsira High area is a geologic “high” in the North Sea subsurface where it was natural to start searching for oil and gas since hydrocarbons tend to migrate from deeper sediment layers up towards such “highs”- eventually to be trapped in structural and/or stratigraphic traps.
The first oil from the NCS was taken up in 1967 from well 25/11-1 in layers of early Tertiary age (54 million years old) in an area close to the later to be discovered Balder field.
Later on a number of discoveries were made on or near the Utsira High, and ExxonMobil has in fact made or participated in most of these discoveries.

BGS is among the organizations involved in monitoring and modeling the distribution of injected CO in the Utsira Sand to check that it is behaving as predicted and is not migrating out of the intended storage site.
Current research work at BGS is focussed on understanding detailed migration processes within the plume, and relating the seismic signals directly to CO distributions and amounts in the reservoir.
The Utsira Sand is by no means an unusual geological formation in terms of its storage potential, and the Sleipner operation represents just one of many subsurface storage scenarios.

The reservoir used to receive it (the Utsira Sand) is a highly porous and very permeable sandstone, whose pore spaces are normally filled with unusable salty water.
The Utsira Sand is about 200m thick and lies between 800 and 1000m beneath the seabed.
