  India - Uttarakhand
The term Uttarakhand, meaning "northern tract" or "higher tract," refers to the Himalayan districts of Uttar Pradesh, between the state of Himachal Pradesh to the west and Nepal to the east.
The Uttarakhand movement is motivated by regional factors along with economic factors stemming from its particular geography.
In 1995 the agitation was renewed, mostly peacefully, under the leadership of the Uttarakhand Samyukta Sangharsh Samiti (Uttarakhand United Struggle Association), a coalition headed by the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal.

The Uttarakhand people are one such developing society that has not been allowed to reap the fruits of the advancement in technology, especially in the scientific management of its ecosystem.
The Uttarakhand organisation must also come forward to vigorously oppose environmentally destructive agricultural and industrial development and give primary effort to protecting native plants and animals in their natural habitat.
To check this process, the degradation of the Uttarakhand Himalayan ecosystem has to be halted not only for the sake of the local inhabitants but also for the sake of the adjoining plains of northern India where the Himalayan rivers have become flood prone.

The Chipko movement of the Uttarakhand region in the northwest part of India began as a communal reaction of local villagers to protect their forests from commercial deforestation practices.
Under colonial rule, the forests of the Uttarakhand, which were divided into two separate systems (Tehri Gharwal state and Kumaun) at the time, were under much restraint and exploitation as commercial interests replaced old growth forest with chir-pine, coffee, and tea plantations, fruit trees, and mass felling.
Let us not forget that the Uttarakhand people (who were once split into two systems from 1815-1949 into Tehri Gharwal State and Kumaun division) have rooted for their own independence from the state for decades as a result of poor state resource management.
