After Ehime Prefecture was established, the capital was moved to Matsuyama, which is in the northernmost area of Ehime.
In 1917, Maruho village was merged with Uwajima, and Yahata Village was annexed in 1921 - it thus became a unified city.
Uwajima is also home to an unusual fertility shrine called Taga-jinja, which features a large, realistic phallus carved from a log approximately 5 feet in length.

Its capital, Matsuyama, is the largest city on Shikoku, with a population of over 500,000 and an abundance of historical and cultural resources such as the famous Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Hot Spring Spa, the oldest bathing area in Japan.
Ehime, which sounds feminine to Japanese ears and literally means "beautiful maiden", is blessed by a mild climate with an average low of 5.3degrees C (42degrees F)in January and an average high of 27degrees C(81degrees F)in August.
Iyo, the old name for Ehime, is said to have first appeared as the name for the island of Shikoku in the "Kojiki" (Record of Ancient Matters) and the "Nihon Shoki" (Chronicles of Japan), both written in the early eighth century.

Uwajima is situated deep inside the Uwajima Bay with saw-toothed coast facing the Bungo Channel at the southwestern Ehime.
It forms the central city of Ehime located in the southern district embraced by mountains over 1,000 meters high and was flourishing as a castle town for the Date family since the early 17th century.
The largest festival in Uwajima, Warei Grand Festival, is celebrated in every summer at the Warei-jinja Shrine that is worshiped as the protector deity for sea-farers and familiarly called Warei-sama by the local people, and a ritual to pray for rich haul and good harvest is conducted in front of the shrine.

Sasaki said that when she heard of the accident she immediately called a friend whose son attends the high school, and was relieved to find that he was not on the school's training mission in Hawaii.
