Uxbridge is also the home of Brunel University and the civic centre of the London Borough of Hillingdon.
Uxbridge is not mentioned in the Domesday Book of the 11th century, but a hundred years later the existing church, St Margaret's, was built.
Uxbridge is sometimes used as a facetious alternative to Oxbridge, a portmanteau name for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, for example by the I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue radio show.
