Uziel Gal designed the original UZI SMG (Sub Machine gun) back in late 1940's when he was working for the Palmach (underground infantry forces of the Hagana) and specialised in weapons maintenance.
One of the problems Uziel over came was the ability for a soldier to easily and quickly change the magazine during dark combat situations, he did this by housing the magazine in the gun grip.
Uziel Gal never stopped his work with guns through out his life and continued to work for the Israeli Defence Force right up until he retired from them in 1975.
