 IX Corps (ACW)
IX Corps (Ninth Corps) was a corps of the Union Army during the American Civil War that distinguished itself in combat in multiple theaters: the Carolinas, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
In April, the corps was composed of the four divisions of Thomas G. Stevenson, Potter, Willcox, and Ferrero, the latter division being composed wholly of African-American troops.
The IX Corps was prominently connected with the siege because of its role in the infamous Battle of the Crater, in which a lengthy mine shaft was dug from its line to under the Confederate works.

If the attacker has the edge in cavalry, then one corps is permitted to start deployed on the board within 6" of the edge of the board, and within 9" either side of the entry point used, with the rest of the force in road column behind that unit.
In both cases corps troops are promoted to the next level when the majority of the stands in their unit reach that level.
However corps are functional organisations, and it may be sensible for the units left behind in various boxes to be combined as a corps whose function is garrison duties.
