V Shantaram and the growth of a new aesthetic
Rajaram Vankudre, better known as V Shantaram, was born in the princely state of Kolhapur in present day Maharashtra.
Shantaram's first initiation into cinema was through the Kolhapur film company of Babu Rao painter, one of the three great pioneers of Indian cinema.

But the training which Shantaram received from there, as an actor and as a cineaste stood him in good stead in later days, for Babu Rao, even in those nascent years had indicated how seriously he took the film medium.
V H Apte, the famous Marathi writer, whose novel on rural indebtedness Savkari Pash had already been filmed by Painter, was also associated with Prabhat.
These initial forays allowed Shantaram to explore the medium and develop his own style, which came to be identified with innovative camera movements and an ensemble like arrangement of group scenes.
