  German vengeance weapons 1942-45
German rocket scientists had two unofficial research projects "on the drawing board" as early as 1930: a "pilotless plane" (or "robot bomb"), and a long range rocket.
V3 rockets: towards the end of the war, these longer-range projectiles could be fired from a super-long gun barrel on the French coast to reach London.
V3, the third vengeance weapon, consisted of barrages of small rocket projectiles fired from an underground cannon and capable of reaching London from the north French coast at a speed of 1500 metres a second.

The V1 was a pilotless plane that carried on board a cargo of bombs.
When people heard a V1 come over, what they dreaded the most was the terrible noise cutting out because this meant that the flying bomb was about to come crashing down to earth.
The rockets were 45 feet long and weighed 14 tons; they travelled faster than the speed of sound.

 V1 Rocket Propaganda Leaflets
The V1 leaflets are mentioned in a number of The Falling Leaf issues, the journal of the Psywar Society, an international association of psychological warfare historians.
The rockets could be fired from both fixed ramps or from or various Heinkel bombers, not unlike the current Tomahawk cruise missile in the American inventory.
The leaflet was carried by a V1 against Allied troops in the Antwerp, Belgium area on 10 March 1945.

The V-1 was later complemented by the more sophisticated V-2 rocket.
Initially British experts were skeptical of the V-1 because they had considered only solid fuel rockets as a means of propulsion, which put the stated range of 130 miles (209 km) out of question.
However when other types of engine were considered they relented, and by the time German scientists had achieved the needed accuracy for the deployment of the V-1 as a weapon British intelligence had a very accurate characterisation of it.

When the V1 raids began, the only effective defence was interception by a handful of very high performance fighter aircraft, in particular the Hawker Tempest.
Even when caught, the V1 was difficult to bring down: machine gun bullets had little effect on the sheet steel structure and 20mm cannon shells had a shorter range, which meant that setting the warhead off could all too easily destroy the fighter aircraft as well.
In daylight, V1 chases were chaotic and often unsuccessful until a special defence zone between London and the coast was declared in which only the fastest fighters were permitted.

Flying Bombs and Rockets V1 & V2 Statistics
Note also the sudden reduction in bombs week commencing 9th July which was due to the allied bombing of the V1 depots the previous week The rate increased again the following week.
The V2 incidents were of a much lower magnitude but were maintained at a steady rate from October until the end of March 1945.
This is partly due to the fact that the Fire Brigade reports are missing for the period September to December.

The German rocket destroyed a row of cottages and was one of 15 bombs to fall near Manchester on that day.
The worst was in Abbey Hills Road, in Oldham, where a V1 landed on a row of cottages, killing 27 people and seriously injuring 49.
In total, 45 rockets were launched by the Nazis on that day, 31 of which reached the UK.

 The V-Weapons
When the guidance system determined that the rocket was at the target point, it popped out spoilers under the horizontal tailplane to put the bomb into a steep dive to its target, stalling out the engine in the process.
In the middle of the rocket exhaust were four vanes that were used to deflect the thrust and steer the rocket, based upon commands from the guidance system, until engine cutoff.
This could have disastrous consequences if the rockets were located by the Allies, resulting in catastrophic explosions in population centers.

The V2 rocket was a long distance weapon that could travel at the speed of sound.
The first was dropped at Swanscombe in Kent on 13 June 1944 and the last one at Orpington in Kent on 27 March 1945.
They were less accurate than V1 missiles, but since they travelled at the speed of sound, and so made no warning noise before impact, it was almost impossible to defend against them.

Following bomb damage to the Blockhaus, more resources were poured into another underground rocket launch base a few miles away.

I can remember vividly one day I had come home from school (I was at the grammar school now as I was 13 years old) and my mother had come home from work so that we could have lunch together.

During the early to middle summer of 1944, after the invasion of Europe on the 6th June 1944 by the Allies at Normandy, the ever increasing threat of the V1 Rockets targeted on London and the Home Counties was becoming a real concern for the Government, The Allied High Command, and the defence forces.
RAF Bomber Command and the USAAF 8th Bomber Group were to be involved in the concentrated bombing of these targets.
Because the targets were in Northern France, and because the threat of V1 Rockets to the home counties was of such critical importance, the attacks were deemed feasible and the risk of moonlight and clear skies had to be taken.

They were quite often flying low, some trailing smoke, red and green coloured flares falling from the aircraft as they headed inland, home to their bases.
